The ebook service Ebrary has made quite a few improvements lately. No longer do you have to install ebrary reader – which only works with some browsers – to use the service to its full potential. Earlier, thery were also loads of strange quirks in the interface. It’s only a few left now, such as

  1. They could have wasted a lot of empty space in the upper part of the screen, to make room for more hight in the reading area.
  2. Well, they should really rethink the ugly design :) Why not try a contemporary look…

The screenshot below shows Ebrary at the full hight of a 24 inch screen. A 15 inch laptop also works quite well…

ps. Ebrary is a paid service you might have access to if you are a student or staff at a University or other form of higher education.

iProRecorder for iPhone

Are you someone who like to take notes about this and that, while taking a walk, while having a coffe in some obscure little coffee shop or travelling – and you also happen to own a iPhone. Then I can recommend iProRecorder from Bias. I have tested quite a few recorder apps this week and iProRecorder stands out with an excellent audio quality and design. If you don’t mind lousy sound quality, I can really recommend Evernote with its outstanding workflow – note that a lousy sound quality might not be bad for you, since it comes with very small file sizes.

Note!!! I had some problems with the wav files iPhoneRecorder produced when I tried to play them on my computer. This problem has to do with something in VLC, so when I uninstalled VLC it worked perfectly. When I re-installed VLC I choosed not to use it with wav files. Use iTunes or whatever.

Another tips with iPhoneRecorder is to use Safari to transfer the files to your computer. You can do it with all browsers, but if you use Safari with Bonjour you get an nice interface. Using wifi without bonjour produces a very ugly white page with blue links and non-existent images. I used Safari 4.

Amazon recently released a iPhone app for Kindle ebooks. The video from SlateV.come show how kindle ebooks works in a cloud model with iPhone. If you are reading something on your Kindle, and later switch to the iPhone app, information is saved where you are in the books so the reading becomes seamless in the cloud. Of course, if you live outside the US, which I do, this is only a dream so fare. But it is interesting to see cloud thinking coming to the ebook market.

Thanks for the video tip Life Hacker.
